It took me such a long time to actually visit the Ré island – L’Ile de Ré, which is just about 20 minutes drive from La Rochelle (where I’m living). Before, what we did was get on a bus to the bus station, get on another bus which takes us directly to the Sablanceaux beach and back. Then one day I told my husband that we would regret when one day we leave this city and never spend time to discover the island!!! So we got on the car, crossed the bridge (which connects La Rochelle and the island) and to the Ré !
It is a small island off the west coast of La Rochelle. The island is 30 km long and 5 km wide. It has ten communes: Rivedoux-Plage, La Flotte, Sainte-Marie-de-Ré, Saint-Martin-de-Ré, Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré, La Couarde-sur-Mer, Loix, Ars-en-Ré, Saint-Clément-des-Baleines, Les Portes-en-Ré. Be well-prepared if you visit it in the summer, especially you do it on bike. It is very sunny along the coast! We went there with the kids on a very sunny day, and we couldn’t manage to go to the end of the island to see the big light house. Anyway, it is a good reason to come back 😉
Salbanceaux beach – My little Khanh really enjoys the sea
In the summer, you can see hollyhock flowers everywhere in La Rochelle and also in this island. In my mind, this flower is definitely the symbol or one of the special features of the region.
Black hollyhocks, which are rarer than other types.
My little one takes her own route, always. She never cares where we are going.
So I take my own route also, haha.
In La Flotte, you can find some lovely local stores like this.
Then we drove to Saint-Martin de Ré.
and found these lovely things
and lovely places
After that, we headed to Loix and were amazed at this.
Be enjoyed! If you plan to visit the island one day, don’t hesitate to drop me a line 😉
